“In spring, our botanical park is even more charming.”

SPRING IN THE CASTLE

During spring, Soutomaior Castle bursts with energy; days are brighter and lighter. The countless colours of plants, birds and insects can be seen everywhere, even beyond its imposing walls. Although Camellia flowers are gradually fading away from our garden, it is still possible to enjoy the flowers of late-blooming specimens until mid-May. The queen of winter is slowly giving way to other species such as azaleas and rhododendrons, which are in bloom at this time of year.

As the temperature rises, ocellated lizards living on the castle’s walls emerge. They can be seen sunbathing on the parade ground in the morning, seemingly safe as they are seeking the heat of the sun, but always ready to shelter.

It is worth admiring the multicoloured flower buds growing out of the deciduous trees. It is also when migratory birds come back after a long journey. Hoopoes are often the first to appear in the garden; they come to breed at this time of year and stay until late summer. Many swifts also return between April and May; our castle is a paradise for these birds that nest in the crevices and holes of the castle’s walls.

This season is undoubtedly the best time to admire many of the wonders of nature. In Soutomaior Castle, the chromatic harmony can be seen throughout the 25 hectares of land that make up its estate, which is looked after with care. Moreover, it has an excellent location, halfway between the cities of Vigo and Pontevedra. Given its proximity to the sea, mountains and rivers, it has a rich biodiversity, full of colours and contrasts in spring.

In this historic landscape, natural and cultural heritage are perfectly combined; the castle's fruit trees are a clear example of this. They are now beginning to bloom and this attracts a wide variety of pollinators, which help to preserve and reproduce endangered native varieties.

Visit the castle this spring! Do not forget that visiting hours will be extended from May onwards.
